One of my favorite teachers is Pema Chödrön. She has an amazing ability to get to the point without any fanfare, yet from a place of grace and companionship. Her down-to-earth style of teaching gets to the heart of any issue that she is addressing.
When dealing with techniques and methods to calm the mind through meditation, Pema Chödrön easily points out that training our mind is not unlike training a dog. If you have ever trained a dog, you know that when done with gentleness and compassion, helpful and positive outcomes occur.
Loving and consistent guidance teaches a dog what is expected. Doing the same with our own mind training results in equal grace. Learning to stay present to whatever is arising, whether on the cushion or not, takes practice.
